Sasquatch BBQ Cookoff

This was a last-minute event, so time was of the essence. We first heard about it just a few days before the deadline for competitors to enter, so it was essential to get the word out ASAP, but faster.

Our concern on this job was not perfection, although we are very proud of the work we did. The most important thing was getting this flyer onto the local Facebook groups like What's Going On In 29 Palms in time for competitors to sign up.

We got this flyer out the door in a record three hours. It's not the very best flyer we've ever made, but it is the best flyer we've ever made this fast.

A few days passed, pit masters were registered, and it was time to get people to show up. We only had a few days to generate buzz for this event, ande there was a lot of information to convey to prospective customers—far too much for a single flyer.

Our answer was to split the information into groups, and make each group of information it's own unique and different postcard. The first four would convey the most important information, as they would be displayed concurrently in the post header. Prospective customers hooked by the first four cards would be motivated to open up and look at the remaining two cards if they were curious, however all the vitally interesting information was kept to the first four.

First this into card, which has two purposes. First, to let people know there was a BBQ, and second to let them know this was a place to bring your family and meet people—which was actually the main goal of the event: a way for 29 Palms to meet and socialize with their neighbors.

Second, it was obviously vital to let people know where the event would be held, so they could show up there. You might think this would be secondary information people wouldn't need to see unless they had already decided to come to the event. The Desert, however, is large and people want to know how far they'll have to drive, and if it's being held somewhere they'll feel safe.

Unlike the other postcards, this 'info' card which has all the basic details of the event has very clear sand-serif text on a dark background for easiest readability. When people first see it it's a small thumbnail, and it needed to be instantly readable even at very small size.

Also very important to let people know that their kids would be welcome—and entertained, i.e. not bored and fidgeting.

Once the customer has taken in all that important information, they'll know whether they want more details. It's important to keep people from getting overloaded with tom much information all at once, or they'll just shut down and move on.

This guy was great by the way:

We took some video while we were there, that being one of the things that we do:

The event was a great success with only a few days promotion time, and also the BBQ was amazing. We are already looking forward to next year's 2nd Annual Sasquatch BBQ Cookoff.
